Professional Development Learning Modules (Level One) 2010/2011 year

These learning modules may be undertaken individually for professional development or as an integral part of the One Year Part-time YA 200 Course.

Who can take these Modules?

These Modules are applicable only to participants in the YA200 Course.

About the Learning Modules

All modules are facilitated by a trained Yoga teacher with the intention of applying the learning directly to the practice of hatha yoga.

For each module targeted study material is backed by on-site classroom time that includes:

* Multi-media presentations on the topics covered

* Reference to skeletal models (where appropriate)

* Rich discussion based on student participation

* Practical investigation on the “yoga mat”

All on site modules are designed to be hands on and fun experiences. We all learn better when we do, and when we enjoy what we do!

The Learning Modules

There are SIX professional development learning modules spread over 16 on-site classroom weekends:

1. Yoga Anatomy and Physiology I (24 hours)

2. Keeping People Safe (38 hours)

3. Rescue Resuscitation (1 weekend)

5. Fine tuning Teaching Skills I (29 hours)

6. Philosophy Ethics and Lifestyle (25 hours)

Yoga Anatomy and Physiology I (24 hours)

9 - 16 May 2011.

Aim: This module is presented with the intention of bringing anatomy alive and applying it to the practice of hatha yoga. In addition to the basics of anatomy and physiology we investigate a wide range of muscular imbalances that the human body develops due to genetic disposition, upbringing and lifestyle choices.

Keeping People Safe (38 hours)

17-25 May 2011.

Aim: This module is presented to enable the professional yoga teacher to adapt his/her teaching to meet the needs of the individual student who attends their classes. Building upon the learning's gained in Yoga Anatomy and Physiology we apply this knowledge in greater detail to the teaching of asana (poses), in order to keep people with specific injuries (e.g. back, hip, shoulder etc) or medical conditions safe in class.

Example: If a student has scoliosis of the spine how does the teacher:

* advise him/her to work in the asana?

* physically adjust and guide the students body?

How does the teacher instruct someone who has sacroiliac dysfunction to move in the asymmetrical asana and twists?

These and many other injuries and medical conditions are explored in detail both academically and “on the mat”.

Additional Resources: Each student will be required to complete a case study on a specific student.

Rescue Resuscitation (1 weekend)

This Module is taken outside the Yoga Academy any time before the start of Block Course II students must show a certificate of completion before starting Block Course II.

Aim: This course is offered to provide the professional yoga teacher with the knowledge and skills to be able to cope with any emergency that could occur in the class room.

Special Note: This module is a St John First Aid Course or equivalent. This module has a cost of $160.00 (note for those students undertaking the One Year Part-time YA 200 Course this cost is additional to the annual fee).

Fine Tuning Teaching Skills I (29 hours)

17 - 21 May 2011 & 9 - 26 Jan 2012.

Aim: Building upon knowledge and learning's gained from the foundation modules above this practical module assists trainees to fine tune their ability to teach yoga powerfully and with integrity.

Approach: The art of teaching is taught in colleges and universities the world over. By applying the principals of educational psychology, leadership and classroom discipline Jude Hynes brings her specific background in teacher training to this module. She creates a safe environment with the intent to empower trainees to discover and stand true to themselves and deliver their teachings confidently.

Philosophy Ethics and Lifestyle (25 hours)

16 - 25 Jan 2012.

Aim: The wisdom of Yoga provides a fine guide for anyone seeking better relationships with the self and others, enhanced creativity and a more ethical and graceful way of living in the world. Using lively discussion and debate this module explores concepts of Yogic philosophy, ethics and lifestyle choices.

Approach: In this module Jude Hynes shares her personal exploration of yogic teachings from a wide range of sources. This module will take you beyond the physical to a deeper understanding of concepts such as Maya, Sukha, Ahimsa and more.
