YA 200 Yoga Teacher Training Course
June 2011/2012 year

Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 June.
The weekend allows for the formal introduction of the course, the tutors and participants:
* Tutors and students are introduced to one another and given the opportunity to begin developing the relationships that will mature during the course.
* The course syllabus and year calendar are issued. In addition, course policies, structures and procedures are discussed and formally agreed.
* Assignments are outlined and some are issued.
* Explanation of the fundamental techniques of Ujayi breath, the Bhandas, Dristhi and Vinyasa.
* Introduction to Meditation.
* Students are also filmed as a group undertaking the first
asana practice of the course (note this process occurs again
at the end of the course to enable students to see a visible
record of their progress).
3 Month Supervised Asana/Meditation Practice
Monday 6 June - Sunday 28 August 2012 (3 months).
The essence and integrity of teaching yoga comes from one's 10hour a week personal practice. Discipline and commitment to practice is essential .The time-honored adage "you must walk your talk" definitely applies to teaching yoga.
Students attend a total of 10 hours per week of supervised asana and meditation practice in classes, 2 hours in duration.
The following classes are attended by Auckland based students every week:
* Monday 5.30pm Beginners Ashtanga Class
* Tuesday 6.00am Mysore style class or Wednesday 4.00pm or Thursday 6.00am
* Saturday 10.00am Mysore style class
In addition the student selects two more scheduled Mysore Classes from the school timetable which they also attend weekly.
Students will be given assignments, these assignments include keeping a journal/diary, writing book reports and teaching presentation exercises.
Students must complete an approved Rescue Resuscitation Course. This course is required to provide the professional yoga teacher with the knowledge and skills to be able to cope with any emergency that could occur in the class room. The cost of this course is additional to the annual fee.
Students based in other yoga schools outside Auckland and overseas will be supervised by an approved affiliate teachers who practice Ashanga Yoga in the traditional manner as taught by the late Ashtanga Master Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. These students will have similar scheduled classes and their schedule will be drawn up in conjunction with the affiliate teacher.
Monday 29 August to Sunday 18 September 2011 (3 weeks).
There are three professional development learning modules over three weeks:
1. Yoga Anatomy and Physiology I (24 hours)
2. Keeping People Safe (38 hours)
3. Fine tuning Teaching Skills I (13 hours)

Block Course I also includes daily asana/meditation classes, assisting/observation in established Yoga Academy classes and discussions on philosophy.
7 Month Supervised Asana/Meditation Practice
Monday 19 September - Sunday 1 April 2012 (7 months - holiday 22 December - 5 January).
Students attend a total of 10 hours per week of supervised asana practice in classes, up to 2 hours in duration.
The following classes are attended by Auckland based students every week:

Monday 2 April to Sunday 22 April 2012 (3 weeks).
There are three professional development learning modules over three weeks:
1. Fine tuning Teaching Skills I (16 hours)
2. Adjustments (8 hours)
3. Philosophy Ethics and Lifestyle (25 hours)

Block Course II also includes daily asana/meditation classes, assisting and teaching in established Yoga Academy classes philosophy discussions, meditation sessions, and guidance about diet and nutrition.
Graduation Sunday 22 April 2012:
Set in a relaxed atmosphere with music, together with celebratory cake and chai, the graduation ceremony is attended by family, friends and peers. It acknowledges the right of passage from student to teacher.
Certificates are awarded to YA 200 graduates. There are speeches, by both students and teachers and sometimes performances of dance or poetry (as the students wish). Family, friends and peers are thanked and acknowledge for their willingness to support the trainees through the challenging year of transformation and growth.
Note: Video presentations are on view (in particular the first and last asana sessions that visibly show the changes that have occurred over the year) as are still shots of the trainees practicing yoga and meditation and teaching (peer group teaching).

* A statement that you do meet the minimum requirements for competence in asana. e.g. I am proficient in: " salutes " standing poses " basic sitting poses i.e. forward bends, twists and boats " basic back bends i.e. setu bhandasana and urdhva dhanurasana " and inversions.
* Where possible it is advisable to arrange to attend a class in which your asana practice can be assessed. If you are accepted you will be advised – enrollment is completed by the payment of the non-refundable registration fee (see Schedule of Costs ).
