Yoga in the heart of the city

Helen Nicholson

Helen first began practising Iyengar yoga in Sydney and then attended classes at the Iyengar Yoga Institute in London owned by Mira and Silva Metha. However it was at The Auckland Yoga Academy that she developed her practice and began an apprenticeship with Peter in 1996 and 1997.
Helen's teaching was interrupted in 1998 by the birth of her 1st child and she returned to teach Hatha yoga at the AYA in 2008.

Helen says: "What I love about yoga is that it is many things to many people. It can be 'exercise', 'stretching' 'building strength and developing alignment' and/or a meaningful practice which can be both philosophical and spiritual.

In my practice and in my teaching my focus is more on the process of doing an asana rather than an end goal of achievement. I enjoy the attention to detail which helps focus the mind and brings awareness inward. Additionally I have an interest in how a regular yoga practice can help people develop strategies and strengths to cope with anxiety or stress and how over time the practice of yoga can move off the mat and into other areas of life."
